Art and Architecture of Late Medieval Pilgrimage in Northern Europe and the British Isles
This collection includes essays on the visual experience and material culture at medieval pilgrimage shrines of northern Europe and the British Isles, particularly the art and architecture created to intensify spiritual experience for visitors. These studies focus on regional pilgrimage centers which flourished from the 12th-16th centuries, addressing various aspects of visual imagery and architectural space which inspired devotees to value cults of enshrined saints and to venerate them in memory from afar. Subjects include pilgrim dress, jeweled and painted reliquaries, labyrinths, elaborate processions, printed texts of the saint's life, shrines, sculpture and other architectural decoration, and pilgrim souvenirs. Profusely illustrated with 350 photographs, this work will interest scholars and students of art history, history, religious studies, and popular culture.

The Army of Flanders and the Spanish Road 1567-1659

The Army of Flanders and the Spanish Road 1567-1659
The publication of "The Army of Flanders and the Spanish Road" in 1972 marked the birth of the 'new military history', which emphasized military organization - mobilization, pay, supply, morale and, above all, logistics - rather than military 'events' such as sieges and battles. Geoffrey Parker studied one of the great logistical feats of early modern Europe: how Habsburg Spain managed to maintain and mobilize the largest army in Europe in an 80-year effort to suppress the Dutch Revolt, at 700 miles' distance. Using a unique combination of surviving records, he presented strikingly the logistical problems of fighting wars in early modern Europe, and demonstrated why Spain failed to suppress the Dutch Revolt. The book has been constantly cited since its first publication in English (with translations into Spanish and Dutch).

The human mind is arguably the most complex organ in the universe. Modern computers might be faster, and whales might have larger brains, but neither can match the sheer intellect or capacity for creativity that we humans enjoy. In this book, Michael Corballis introduces us to what we’ve learned about the intricacies of the human brain over the last 50 years.

Pieces of Mind 21 Short Walks Around the Human Brain - Michael Corballis

Leading us through behavioural experiments and neuroscience, cognitive theory, and Darwinian evolution with his trademark wit and wisdom, Corballis punctures a few hot-air balloons (‘You only use 10 per cent of your brain!’ ‘Unleash the creativity of your right brain!’) and explains just what we know — and don’t know — about our own minds. From language to standing upright, composing music to bullshitting, he covers some of the fascinating activities and capabilities that go towards making us human.

At one time or another, we’ve all wished that we could get inside someone else’s head. Here’s how.

Hardcover: 608 pages
Publisher: Firefly Books; Second Printing edition (September 1, 2001)

Antarctica has not always been a place of ice and snow. Once part of the supercontinent of Gondwanaland, it is believed to have enjoyed a warmer climate in which plants and land animals thrived. However, nowadays less than one percent of the surface is ice free, and at bedrock level the ice can be up to a million or more years old. In comparison, the Arctic consists entirely of pack-ice which breaks into ice floes in summer and floats on the Arctic Ocean.
