*Nations and Citizens in Yugoslavia and the Post-Yugoslav States: One Hundred Years of Citizenship by Igor Štiks

English | 2015 | ISBN: 1474221521, 1350007633 | 240 pages | PDF | 2 MB
Between 1914 and the present day the political makeup of the Balkans has relentlessly changed, following unpredictable shifts of international and internal borders. Between and across these borders various political communities were formed, co-existed and (dis)integrated.
By analysing one hundred years of modern citizenship in Yugoslavia and post-Yugoslav states, Igor Štiks shows that the concept and practice of citizenship is necessary to understand how political communities are made, un-made and re-made. He argues that modern citizenship is a tool that can be used for different and opposing goals, from integration and re-unification to fragmentation and ethnic engineering.
The study of citizenship in the 'laboratory' of the Balkands offers not only an original angle to narrate an alternative political history, but also an insight into the fine mechanics and repeating glitches of modern politics, applicable to multinational states in the European Union and beyond.

*Capitalism and Classical Social Theory, Second Edition by John Bratton and David Denham

English | 2014 | ISBN: 1442608099, 1442606533 | 432 pages | PDF | 4,8 MB
Most texts on classical social theory offer exhaustive coverage of every possible theorist, making it difficult to use the book in one semester. Capitalism and Classical Social Theory, Second Edition represents a departure from this approach by offering solid coverage of the classical triumvirate (Marx, Durkheim, and Weber), but also extending the canon strategically to include Simmel, four early female theorists, and the writings of Du Bois. The result is a manageable, but thorough, examination of the key classical theorists.
The second edition has been updated throughout and includes two new chapters: one on Weber and rationalization, and one on Du Bois and his writings on race. A new concluding chapter links classical theory to current developments in capitalism during an age of austerity.

*Re-inventing Western Civilisation: Transnational Reconstructions of Liberalism in Europe in the Twentieth Century by Niklas Olsen and Hagen Schulz-Forberg

English | 2014 | ISBN: 1443860492 | 260 pages | PDF | 2 MB
The volume shows that neoliberalism concerns a tradition carried by a network of people, who understood themselves as liberals (and at times as neoliberals) and who sought to create societies based on individual freedom and a free market economy. It also shows that neoliberalism emerged as a transnational and multilingual phenomenon and that it cannot be reduced to one doctrine or practice. The book will enrich the reader's knowledge of the political-ideological landscapes and developments in various European regions and countries, in addition to transforming the overall picture of European (neo)liberalisms in the twentieth century.

*The SAGE Handbook of Social Cognition by Susan T. (Tufts) Fiske and C Neil Macrae

English | 2012 | ISBN: 0857024817 | 592 pages | PDF | 6,4 MB
The SAGE Handbook of Social Cognition is a landmark volume. Edited by two of the field′s most eminent academics over the past two decades and supported by a global advisory board of similar magnitude, the 56 authors, each an expert in their own chapter topic, provide authoritative and thought-provoking overviews of this fascinating territory of research. Not since the early 1990s has a Handbook been published in this field, one that has just exploded in terms of published literature and methodological developments since that time. Now, Susan T. Fiske and C. Neil Macrae have provided a timely and seminal benchmark; a state of the art overview that will benefit advanced students and academics not just within social psychology but beyond these borders too.

*After Rape: Violence, Justice, and Social Harmony in Uganda (The International African Library) by Holly Porter

English | 2016 | ISBN: 110718004X | 268 pages | PDF | 3,2 MB
Following the ICC intervention in 2005, northern Uganda has been at the heart of international justice debates. The emergent controversy, however, missed crucial aspects of Acholi realities: that the primary moral imperative in the wake of wrongdoing was not punishment but, instead, the restoration of social harmony. Drawing upon abundant fieldwork and in-depth interviews with almost 200 women, Holly Porter examines issues surrounding wrongdoing and justice, and sexual violence and rape, among the Acholi people in northern Uganda. This intricate exploration offers evidence of a more complicated and nuanced explanation of rape and its aftermath, suggesting a re-imagining of the meanings of post-atrocity justice, whilst acknowledging the role of sex, power and politics in all sexual experiences between coercion and consent. With its wide investigation of social life in northern Uganda, this provocative study offers vital analysis for those interested in sexual and gender violence, post-conflict reconstruction and human rights.
