There's an intriguing backstory to how the sandwich became popular. The 4th Earl of Sandwich, John Montagu, was an avid gambler. In 1762, John had been playing card games for 24 hours and did not want to get up for lunch. The Earl requested that his servant prepare food that would not interfere with his game. His valet put a salt beef between two pieces of toasted bread, which he ate with one hand. John's friend was impressed and asked for the same food. A popular convenience food worldwide now, it is named after the former Earl of Sandwich, an 18th-century English aristocrat.

The sandwich, however, was not invented by John Montagu or his valet. It was popular among the Turks and Greeks in the Eastern Mediterranean for a long time. Some believe the Earl asked his servant to replicate the idea. There are numerous sandwich varieties available today. Tea sandwiches in the United Kingdom are made with bread filled with cucumber, fish paste, tomato, or watercress. Scandinavian smørrebrød are served open-faced. They include sliced meats, fish toppings, and salad. French sandwiches are typically made with hollowed-out slices of bread. Sandwiches are elaborate in the United States. The club sandwich is a well-known American dish. However, a sandwich's four essential components remain the same: bread, filling, spread, and garnish.

In this book, I'll introduce you to various sandwiches worldwide and show you how to make them at home. I will also tell you about the ingredients for each one of them.
