The Bioethics of Enhancement: Transhumanism, Disability, and Biopolitics by Melinda Hall
English | 2016 | ISBN: 1498533485 | 192 pages | PDF | 1 MB
In a critical intervention into the bioethics debate over human enhancement, philosopher Melinda Hall tackles the claim that the expansion and development of human capacities is a moral obligation. Hall draws on French philosopher Michel Foucault to reveal and challenge the ways disability is central to the conversation. The Bioethics of Enhancement includes a close reading and analysis of the last century of enhancement thinking and contemporary transhumanist thinkers, the strongest promoters of the obligation to pursue enhancement technology. With specific attention to the work of bioethicists Nick Bostrom and Julian Savulescu, the book challenges the rhetoric and strategies of enhancement thinking. These include the desire to transcend the body and decide who should live in future generations through emerging technologies such as genetic selection. Hall provides new analyses rethinking both the philosophy of enhancement and disability, arguing that enhancement should be a matter of social and political interventions, not genetic and biological interventions. Hall concludes that human vulnerability and difference should be cherished rather than extinguished.
This book will be of interest to academics working in bioethics and disability studies, along with those working in Continental philosophy (especially on Foucault).

Midwifery, Childbirth and the Media By Ann Luce, Vanora Hundley, Edwin van Teijlingen
English | EPUB | 2017 | 167 Pages | ISBN : 3319635123 | 1.07 MB
This edited collection - one of a kind in its field - addresses the theoretical and practical implications facing representations of midwifery and media. Bringing together international scholars and practitioners, this succinct volume offers a cross-disciplinary discussion regarding the role of media in childbirth, midwifery and pregnancy representation.
One chapter critiques the provision and dissemination of health information and promotional materials in a suburban antenatal clinic, while others are devoted to specific forms of media - television, the press, social media – looking at how each contribute to women’s perceptions and anxieties with regard to childbirth.

American Hegemony after the Great Recession: A Transformation in World Order By Brandon Tozzo
English | PDF,EPUB | 2017 (2018 Edition) | 160 Pages | ISBN : 1137575387 | 1.72 MB
This book traces America's rise as a hegemon of the capitalist system, arguing that the greatest threat to global economic stability is America's polarized and ineffectual political system rather than foreign competition from China and the European Union.
The author points to China’s considerable demographic problem, which will likely undermine its economic potential. Furthermore, the sovereign debt crisis in Europe – which has left the continent politically fragmented by an institutional malaise – is evidence of the United States’ continued status as the world’s most successful nation. Tozzo posits that, due to factors such as its initial response to the financial crisis, the near failure of its banking system, the catastrophe of the debt ceiling crisis, and the election of Donald Trump as president, the greatest threat to American hegemony is America itself.
